Radio Development Fund

The Radio Development Fund (RDF) was set up in 2001 to allow the Radio Committee a degree of flexibility with which to support new initiatives outside of the normal budgetary process. The RDF aimed at reviving and encouraging collaborative projects among Members for the sake of more diverse programme content.

Since 2003, the Radio Committee has approved the production of the following joint projects:

  • Lemmy's Gang - submitted by YLE / Finland (2003)
  • The Unexpected European - submitted by BBC / UK (2006)
  • Borders - submitted by BBC / UK (2007)
  • Europe - Terra Incognita - submitted by DW / Germany (2007)
  • The Linz Danube Tour - submitted by ORF / Austria (2007-2009)
  • I live in the Balkans - submitted by BNR / Bulgaria (2008-2009)
  • Europe, Personally - submitted by RTVSLO / Slovenija (2008-2009)
  • Pan-European digital platform / Eurosonic Unplugged - submitted by DRS / Switzerland (2009-2010)
  • La Via della Plata - submitted by RAI / Italy (2010-2011)

The latest project, La Via della Plata, was successfully completed in 2011. It followed a journey on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela, and its goal was to transmit different programmes produced in cooperation with six Italian speaking radio stations. Two speakers took turns walking from Seville to Santiago de Compostela, for one week each, during six weeks (2 May - 12 June 2011). Every day, they sent by phone their spoken journal to be broadcast by each radio station in an appropriate format, and a website was also created for this occasion: http://laviadellaplata.blog.rai.it/
